Because of their increased likelihood of causing accidents, first-time drivers often face higher auto insurance premiums than their more experienced counterparts.

In many states, they are also subject to restrictions on the number of passengers they may have and the hours in which they are allowed to operate a motor vehicle. First-time drivers in New Jersey are required to attach a decal to their vehicles that will make it easier for law enforcement officials to identify and regulate them.

However, many of these teenagers are neglecting to abide by the law, according to a recent report by the Associated Press. Of the 250,000 drivers that should purchase the decal, about 59,537 have actually done so. Those who do not attach a decal despite their first-time status may face a $100 fine.

Critics of the law have said it would subject young drivers to unnecessary traffic stops and may make them targets for crime.

Inexperience behind the wheel may be why motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for individuals age 15 to 20, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Driving during the night and having teen passengers can also increase the risk of an accident.
