Having the appropriate level of insurance before an accident occurs can help motorists ensure their claims are covered.
A recent report by the Sun Sentinel offered advice on reviewing an auto insurance policy. First, consumers should consider buying well over the minimum amount of insurance necessary, particularly when personal injury and property damages incurred in an accident are prone to exceeding these numbers.
“If someone is found legally responsible for bills that are higher than what their insurance covers, they will have to pay the difference out of their own pocket,” Lynne McChristian, a Florida spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute, told the Sentinel.
Uninsured motorist and bodily injury liability coverage can help protect against unexpected losses. Those with newer or more valuable vehicles may also look into collision and comprehensive policies, which cover damage incurred from hitting a pothole, wild animal, flood water or more.
Consumers with children should ensure that these individuals are well-covered, according to the report. Otherwise, they may face lawsuits from their kids’ accidents.
Discounts are often available for carpoolers or motorists with strong driving records. Cost-cutters may also consider raising their auto insurance deductibles.
